More Prayer

RESOURCES  (Day 6 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

… I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people … 1 Timothy 2:1  ESV

There are a bazillion prayer resources (please share your favorites as a comment to this post).

I do like the daily prayers from Aaron and Jennifer Smith (Unveiled Wife / Marriage After God).

Marriage Prayers – sign up for emails here

I also like the folks at Fierce Marriage. Ryan & Selena Frederick have a number of good marriage resources, including these prayer books.

40-Day Prayer Journey – double book set for husbands and wives

Bible and prayer journal

Probably my biggest encouragement is to grab a notebook and pen and write down your prayers. You can write as much or as little as you like, but the practice of writing down what you talk about with God can be very trust building. It’s amazing to look through your prayer journal months later and see how God has responded to your prayers. He is a good God, and He loves you and your spouse very much.

Ready. Set. Pray.

SECOND TRY  (Day 5 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

… I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people … 1 Timothy 2:1  ESV

Another day for experimenting with prayer.

hands at prayer

Do you have a set time and place to pray? Maybe a habit tracker or a sticky note on your bathroom mirror?

Don’t know what to pray? How about using part of this scripture …

I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might. Ephesians 1:16-19  ESV

You could ask for wisdom for your spouse (work, parenting, etc.) or you could ask God to show your spouse how powerfully He is working in their life. And, of course, it doesn’t have to be this scripture. Proverbs is pretty good too when it comes to prayer fodder.  🙂

Let prayer for your spouse take up a bit of your day.

What’s Stopping You?

ROAD BLOCKS  (Day 4 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

… I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people … 1 Timothy 2:1  ESV

One of the biggest road blocks to prayer is when I’m hacked off at someone. I go from “God, I don’t want to pray for them, I want to smack them.” to “God, fix them!” Not really what God had in mind for prayer, I would imagine. In fact, one of my go-to signs that I’ve forgiven someone is that I can pray good things for them.

wife dealing with anger

So when I get upset at my hubby, the first thing I have to do is present my heart to God and let Him help me settle down (love the book Unoffendable, it’s been a great help in this area). I trust God with His timetable and agenda, not mine.

Other roadblocks are distraction and busyness. Sometimes I don’t know what to pray. I used to do a daily prayer prompt back on the old blog. Hmmm. I need to think about that.

What are common road blocks to prayer for your spouse?

Make a Habit

FIRST TRY  (Day 3 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

… I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people … 1 Timothy 2:1  ESV

In the last few days, what concerns has your spouse voiced? What have they talked about or wished for? Have they been hurt or confused?

Whatever the concern, pause a moment and talk to God about it. Ask God for His wisdom and care. Ask for solutions or heart change.

If you want to make it a daily habit (and I encourage you to do so), try attaching the new prayer habit to an old habit that is well established (like praying for your spouse when you make the bed or walk the dog).

This is just a first try, so don’t make it a 3-hour marathon, just a moment where you talk to God about your sweetie.

SELF-EXAMINATION  (Day 2 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

How does prayer fit into your life? Do you have times of prayer? Do to talk to God off and on during the day? Do you lie in bed at night and realize you haven’t spoken to Him at all during the day?

No shame. Okay? We all start somewhere in our relationships and the one we have with God is no different.

Take the day and let God talk to you about your relationship with Him. Look at your history of prayer and how you pray for your spouse.

Prayer

CONCEPT  (Day 1 of 7)

This week, let’s spend some time learning about prayer and working it into our lives and marriages (I figure spouses are a part of “all people”).

… I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people … 1 Timothy 2:1  ESV

couple praying together

Let’s begin by spending time just thinking about this scripture and the concept of prayer. Here are a few dictionary definitions to help us along.

supplication: the action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly

prayer: a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God

intercession: the action of intervening on behalf of another.

thanksgiving: the expression of gratitude, especially to God.

Park this in your head for today and ask God to teach you about prayer. If you have the time, look up a few other scriptures about prayer and add them to your considerations.
