Throw Out Your Assumptions

SELF-EXAMINATION  (Day 2 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

So how do you do in making assumptions? Do you invite folks to share about themselves or do you put them in a box of your own making?

For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? 1 Corinthians 2:11a  Amp

I have always had a running idea of who I think people are. In one sense, kind of normal, but after being fooled a number of times (both good and bad), I realized my limitations (I’m not in their head, they are).

I’ve tried tossing my assumptions, making room for what they say, and holding any opinions I make about them loosely. I think I still have quite a bit of growing to do in this area.

In my marriage I call it “being a student of my spouse.” Paul has changed over the years and I need to stay current. Even though I know him pretty well, I still need to invite his thoughts and give him elbow room to change.

Think It Over

CONCEPT  (Day 1 of 7)

I don’t know about y’all, but I am quick to assume I know another’s thoughts or motives based on my interpretation of their words and actions.

God says, “Uh, no.”

For what person knows the thoughts and motives of a man except the man’s spirit within him? 1 Corinthians 2:11a  Amp

Let’s spend the day thinking about this concept. We cannot know what’s going on in another’s heart and mind, just as others cannot know us unless we choose to reveal what’s going on inside of us.

What is that supposed to look like in our relationships? Where have assumptions impacted your life and marriage?

Another Good Book

 REFLECTION  (Day 7 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Our three areas of reflection this week.

PRAYER – ‘Cause we so need His help.
SEX – Receive God’s good gift for married folk.
PEACE MAKING – Bring peace wherever you go.

I mentioned that I was rereading The Peacemaker (an excellent book), but I am also reading The Men We Need by Brant Hansen (author of the book Unoffendable that I’ve mentioned before).

The Men We Want book

I would encourage both men and women to read this book. Hansen shares some simple biblical texts (and some very crazy humor) that make manhood and masculinity more understandable.

As a woman, it made very good sense to me and gives me a little direction in affirming the men and grandsons in my world.

I would love for Hansen to write a companion book called The Women We Need. Maybe we can talk his wife into it.

A Hug and a Prayer

REFLECTION  (Day 6 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Our three areas of reflection this week.

PRAYER – ‘Cause we so need His help.
SEX – Receive God’s good gift for married folk.
PEACE MAKING – Bring peace wherever you go.

So how’s it going?

I’ve been practicing praying when I first identify a need (instead of saying, “I’ll pray for you.”). My sweetie has been doing more of that too and I really enjoy the quick spontaneous prayer hugs.

I did mention that I would be exploring the Pelvic Floor Strong resource more thoroughly.

Pelvic Floor Strong

I’ll own I’m a fan of written material over videos, so I downloaded the Pelvic Floor Manual that came with the system’s purchase. I took the time to read how Alex defines and explains various terms (always good to be on the same page) and I looked at additional exercise options. Posture is a related issue and there are some shoulder exercises.

Turns out my pelvic floor muscles were a bit overactive and tense. The three basic exercises are good for that, but there are a couple of other exercises I can do, so they are now a part of my exercise routine.

As to peacemaking – I’ve been a bit convicted that I need to be more peaceful inside, so I can be a peacemaker on the outside. My most unsuccessful peacemaking moments happened when I was anxious and stressed. No big surprise there.

Lovin’ the extra week to spend more time with each concept.

Got Peace?

REFLECTION  (Day 5 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Our three areas of reflection this week.

PRAYER – ‘Cause we so need His help.
SEX – Receive God’s good gift for married folk.
PEACE MAKING – Bring peace wherever you go.

I was thinking about the times I was able to be a good peacemaker and those times when … well, not so much. I realized a huge factor was how much peace I had going on inside of me.

stacked rocks with word peace

If I was tense or upset I didn’t do as well trying to bring peace to the situation. If I had worked through my emotions and was pretty settled, being a peacemaker was far easier.

What factors make it easier for you to be a peacemaker?

Stay Healthy for Sex

REFLECTION  (Day 4 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Our three areas of reflection this week.

PRAYER – ‘Cause we so need His help.
SEX – Receive God’s good gift for married folk.
PEACE MAKING – Bring peace wherever you go.

A bit of a story here …

A while back I had a hysterectomy (benign tumor). My surgeon said my pelvic floor was in good shape (yay, Kegel exercises!), but after several weeks of downtime after surgery I felt I was losing a bit of ground.

I took a chance on an ad for a pelvic floor exercise program. Honestly, when I downloaded it all I thought for sure I’d fallen for a minor scam, but I had promised myself I would work the program, and so I did.

Two weeks later, I was pleasantly surprised at a real sense of regained ground and, bigger surprise, there was a bit of sexual improvement (my husband even noticed the change).  🙂

I tell this story (pardon the TMI) so that y’all will consider taking care of your body in light of sexual function. Get good sleep, eat healthy, exercise, etc. It’s all good for quality of life, including being able to move well for sex.

Exercising your pelvic floor muscles is also a good call, especially after babies or as we age (don’t you just hate the leaky thing). Do a bit of research and find something that works for you.

happy fit wife

Here’s the program I signed on for. It’s fairly inexpensive and rests on three simple exercises (OK, two, the third one takes a bit of coordination). You do each exercise for one minute every day (or two). That’s it. Three exercises. Three minutes. (Yes, I know, it sounds too simple.)

Pelvic Floor Strong

There’s a bit more to the program, if you want (dealing with Diastasis Recti and general overall core health). I really liked how the PC muscles were treated within the whole pelvic floor and as part of a whole core system, rather than focusing only on the PC muscles.

I am going to spend more time looking at the entire program (who doesn’t want a flat tummy?) and there are a couple of freebie downloads and some product to explore. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences if you try the same program.

Stay healthy, so you can enjoy sex for a lifetime. 🙂
