Look for Generous Opportunities

SECOND TRY  (Day 5 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Ready to try again?

The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Proverbs 11:25 AMP

As you walk through your day, look for little opportunities to love on and bless your sweetie (others too as you have time and energy).

The lovely thing is that many generous actions don’t take that much additional time or energy.

A kind word in passing, buying an extra coffee to share, or offering to help take out the trash is relatively simple and easy, but it can be huge in letting those around you know you care.

Create Your Own Generous Standard

SELF-EXAMINATION  (Day 4 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Probably the biggest road block to being generous for me was the fear of going without.

The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Proverbs 11:25 AMP

If I do all this giving, who will take care of me? Without realizing it I was keeping score and giving only about as much as I got. That meant I was at the mercy of other people’s goodness (or lack thereof).

Beating this meant trusting God to take care of me and building my own generosity standard. I chose to be a generous person and give regardless of what others were doing (or not doing).

I started small and built trust in God along the way. There were frustrating times when my generosity was rejected or my motivation was judged, but God was (and is) always faithful to take care of me anyway. I continue to choose generosity and learn.

My other roadblock is busyness.

You can’t be too generous if you’re always rushing around and then falling down exhausted. Developing a healthy life pace has been huge for me and certainly one I continue to grow in.

I’ve also had to grow in grace. God asks us to lavish care – even on those stinky people who irritate us. It’s amazing how the fruit of generosity can heal and change folks (that would be me too).

What hangs y’all up when it comes to generosity?

Generosity Day

FIRST TRY  (Day 3 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Look for little ways to be generous with your spouse today. Perhaps serve up breakfast, run an errand for them, or help them with their least favorite chore.

The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Proverbs 11:25 AMP

While you’re at it, watch God bless you back.

blessed sign

I’ve been trying to out-generous God for years. He’s still winning.  🙂

Share Your Chocolate

SELF-EXAMINATION  (Day 2 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

I grew up with a stingy mom (explaining, not judging, she grew up in the Depression Era) and so I learned to be stingy. When I grew older and married, I hated what it was doing to my husband and me, so I asked God to help me change that. The Generous Wife blog was born out of that adventure.

While I may have a lot of years of practice under my belt, I’m human and if I don’t stay invested in being generous, it’s easy to slide into any number of selfish behaviors.

The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Proverbs 11:25 AMP

So today I’m watching how I share with, love on, and generally serve my sweetie (and others too). Generosity is foundational in the Kingdom with some amazing good consequences.

Generosity, Take Two

CONCEPT  (Day 1 of 7) – Let’s try this again.

I’m a fan of generosity. 🙂

dictionary with generous definition

Apparently, so is God. He likes generosity, and He blesses those who are generous. Almost every time generosity is mentioned in scripture it is followed by the promise of blessing.

The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Proverbs 11:25 AMP

Spend today talking to God about generosity and what that might look like in various relationships, especially marriage.

That’s a Win!

REFLECTION  (Day 6 of 6)
(Need to start at the beginning?  Day 1)

Today is the last day of reflection for these three concepts

don’t assume – we can’t know another’s mind and heart
don’t slack off – have a healthy balance of work, play, and rest
seek wisdom – ask God for what you need

Take a moment and consider your wins. Really.

wife with two thumbs up

It’s a little too easy to see all the areas where we still need to grow or where we tried and failed. Growing is a process, and we need encouragement along the way.

Bless y’all for looking at yourselves and working to do what will help grow your marriage. That’s a win!
