Write It Down

REFLECTION & PRACTICE (Day 5 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Our three concepts to think about and practice this week:

chose your words carefully – be a blessing
celebrate – ’cause He is good all the time
seek calm quiet moments – for reflection and enjoyment

Do y’all keep a journal?

I’ve been trying to write at least a couple of sentences each day in my journal and it does have a quieting and reflective quality about it.

journal

If you are struggling to quiet yourself, try picking up a small notebook and pen to journal. Even if your entries are a bit boring at first (I went to the library and did some grocery shopping), it will build the habit of pausing in your day to reflect about life.

It can also be a tool to grow your marriage. Write down your thoughts, write down what you are grateful for, sound out solutions to problems, or write lists of things that would make good gifts for your sweetie.

Many thanks to those who have given to our yearly fund-raising. We’re off to a great start! Your support makes it possible for us to give all our time to helping couples grow their marriage.

Little Moments of Beauty

REFLECTION & PRACTICE (Day 4 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Our three concepts to think about and practice this week:

chose your words carefully – be a blessing
celebrate – ’cause He is good all the time
seek calm quiet moments – for reflection and enjoyment

Y’all, I had the perfect quiet moment with a splash of beauty.

My husband and I play chauffeur for our grandson once a week. We pull up in front of his house and Paul will go in and get him if he’s not waiting on the porch.

While I was sitting in the car waiting, I took a moment to sit in the calm and I was treated to lovely frost on the car windows. (I shared it with Paul and the grandson when they climbed in the car.)

I even thought to take a picture to share with y’all. 🙂

Working on a Replacement

REFLECTION & PRACTICE (Day 3 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Our three concepts to think about and practice this week:

chose your words carefully – be a blessing
celebrate – ’cause He is good all the time
seek calm quiet moments – for reflection and enjoyment

When I’m tired or busy, I tend to be less careful about my words. I’ve thought about this some when I’m not tired or busy because that’s when I might be able to come up with a solution for the problem.

hand picking up word good

I’ve got a few words I’d like to remove from my vocabulary (the ones I use when I’m tired or busy), so I’ve been considering replacement words. It’s far easier to stop something when I have something I can do instead. Then it just becomes a matter of practicing. The more I practice, the easier it is to do the new thing even when I’m tired or busy (I hope).

What are you thinking about and working on this week?

It’s Giving Tuesday and the start of our year-end donation season. Paul and I invite you to give to our ministry so that we are freed up to serve couples in building their marriages. We honestly couldn’t do this without you!

Celebration Prep

REFLECTION & PRACTICE (Day 2 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Our three concepts to think about and practice this week:

chose your words carefully – be a blessing
celebrate – ’cause He is good all the time
seek calm quiet moments – for reflection and enjoyment

I’m still on a celebration kick.

What do I need to have on hand to make celebrations happens more easily? Much of it’s attitude and whatever I have on hand, but I could do with a little preparation, I think (because what I have on hand could be better).

pile of small gifts

A small stash of gifts would be helpful. (My DIL actually has a basket of kid items tucked away. She uses them for gifts or prizes in games.)

I also have a list of birthdays and holidays on my Notion that get put on my calendar as well. Sometimes I get really organized and write down what I give people so I don’t duplicate and it gives me ideas for future gifts for others. I’m also trying to keep cards and postcards handy (and stamps!).

Simple recipes are good to have on hand (and their ingredients) and large rolls of paper for banners.

I’m on a roll here myself. 🙂 What are your thoughts? How do you make celebrating easier?

Just FYI, Blank Slate and Ransom Notes are fun games. We played them during the Thanksgiving game marathon and they were hits. Having a few games on hand for different kinds/ages of groups is a good celebration idea too!

Thoughtful and Meaningful Holidays

REFLECTION & PRACTICE (Day 1 of 7)

Our three concepts to think about and practice this week:

chose your words carefully – be a blessing
celebrate – ’cause He is good all the time
seek calm quiet moments – for reflection and enjoyment

I’m giving more thought to celebration. I just walked through the Thanksgiving holiday, and I’m facing down Christmas. What do I need to consider and do so that Christmas has more meaning and makes for a healthy, happy holiday? I’d like to give glory to God and bless those in my life.

small gift

I’m also praying about gift giving. I don’t consider myself a stellar gift giver, but can that change with prayer and practice? Yeah, I think I’ve just been lazy about something that doesn’t come easily to me.

I have some sad news to share today. I’m also asking for your prayers and giving (if you are able).

Doug Taylor passed away on November 24th. It was not expected, and everyone in the marriage blogging community is stunned. His wife Chris has been a faithful blogger and podcaster for many years, encouraging couples to grow their marriage. She is understandably grieving and facing a very new season of life.

Please pray for Chris and her family. If you are able, there is a GoFundMe account to help her to deal with medical and funeral expenses.

Stop and Have Some Pie

CONCLUSIONS  (Day 7 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

So how was your week?

Did you make time for a calm pause (perhaps include some beauty in the mix)?

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Matthew 13:1 ESV

I realized that though I can make time for a bit of alone time, I’m not always as present as I’d like to be. My outside slows down, but my inside is still buzzing. More rumination needed on that one.

I’m also trying to be better about inviting Paul into those moments. Shared calm and beauty is a sweet thing in a relationship.

Well, we managed to keep the Thanksgiving tradition of more pies than people (I think there were at least 25 pies, we had a big crowd). This is just the start of setting them out.

lots and lots of pies

For the next few days, it’s leftovers, pies, and games.
