Just a Little Step

REFLECTION  (Day 2 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Big changes are great, if you can pull them off. Sometimes it’s possible, but, honestly, small routine changes work better. You build a small habit and it becomes a part of the way you do life.

Baby steps –  trust the process. Author Unknown

I’ll own that I find baby steps a bit frustrating. I want to get things done well and completely, right now. However, I’ve tried a number of things over the years and, from experience, I know the habits that stick for me are the ones I build slowly a step at a time. When I take off too big a bite, I get emotional indigestion and step away.

So this is my encouragement to y’all. Please do pick one or two things to work on this new year. Learn and practice small changes until they become second nature.

It can be something as simple as meditating on a new scripture each week or saying something positive to your spouse each morning.

Let’s continue to grow in integrity and build our marriages.

Oh! And Merry Christmas, y’all. May your marriages be blessed this holiday season.

Marriage-Friendly Choices

REFLECTION  (Day 1 of 7)

Normally I’d do a week of reflection on the past three concepts, but as we’re ending the year, I thought I’d do some general reflection.

The information you consume each day is the soil from which your future thoughts are grown. James Clear

As you leave 2023 and go into 2024, give some thought to what you “consume.” What you expose yourself to, impacts what you think about and then what you do. Has your daily walk been marriage-friendly or has it put up a few roadblocks to friendship, intimacy, and fun with your sweetie?

Use the exchange of years to examine your lifestyle choices and build a world that will support your marriage in a healthier way. Think back to those things that helped you focus on your marriage. Can you make those things a regular habit? Can you talk through any hurtful things with your spouse and try another option?

What do you need to add to your life to help you build your marriage? What do you need to remove?

One of my self-care goals is to be more creative. All work and no play makes Lori a dull girl. I’m not looking to spend my days painting masterpieces. I’m just working more creativity and play into my days.

Here’s a simple ornament I made. It’s normally done with strips of fabric, but these are made with ribbon from Dollar Tree.

Peace Out

CONCLUSIONS – INNER PEACE  (Day 7 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

This was a challenging week for me.

Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts… Colossians 3:15a AMP

I realized I was dealing with more anxiety and worry than I thought I was. That said, I’ve come along way over the years, and it’s always an encouragement to see that.

I’m just going to keep on keepin’ on, doing more of those things that help me grow up and lean into Him.

How did you do? What did you learn?

Be at Peace

RESOURCES – INNER PEACE  (Day 6 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Any resource that addresses your most current stresses would be good.

Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts… Colossians 3:15a AMP

If you’re struggling financially, grab your sweetie and take a class at Financial Peace University. If you’re struggling with loneliness, join a small group at your church or offer to be a greeter on Sunday mornings. Spend more time in the Word, in prayer, and in fellowship. Be proactive about facing what stresses you.

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality book

My go-to book is Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero. Anything that helps me grow up and lean on Christ is a must-read. This book is also on my 2024 reading list.

Please share any good resources that you know of. Share the wealth.

Keep the Peace

SECOND TRY – INNER PEACE  (Day 5 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

Let’s take another day of experimenting with inner calm.

Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts… Colossians 3:15a AMP

What stresses you out? How can you make room for God to move into your angst?

Where do you need more calm in your marriage? Is there something you and your spouse could talk and pray about?

Inner Peace

ROADBLOCKS – INNER PEACE (Day 4 of 7)
(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)

So what stands in the way?

Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts… Colossians 3:15a AMP

Looking for a source of peace other than Christ is bound to fail. I’m thinking about saying things like, “Life will be better when the kids are in school.” or “When one of us gets a raise, life will settle down and get easier.” Certainly some circumstances do make life easier, but if circumstantial peace is our source of inner peace, we’re asking for disappointment.

And, sadly, I think for many of us, trauma creates added chaos in our hearts and minds. The wounding that comes from our broken world, can mess with our ability to sort life out well. I think that’s why the spiritual disciplines (prayer, fasting, study of the Word, etc.) are so important. They help us calm down and lean into the healing strength of God.

What are your struggles with having an inner calm? Where and how does that impact your marriage?
