Yesterday, I talked about all the folks who are trying to make you someone other than who God wants you to be. But I left out the big one: Your spouse!

It makes sense. I have a major stake in who my wife is. And out of my selfishness, I want her to be the person I want, and be all about giving me what I want. I don’t want her to change in ways that cost me. Of course, this is in stark contrast to how God calls me to love my wife.

A man trying to keep his wife on the status quo pathway.

How well are you doing at loving your spouse the way God wants you to love them? Are you encouraging them to become who God wants them to be, or are you holding them back out of selfishness? Are you doing everything you can to help them grow and change, or do you just look on as they struggle?

A marriage focused on mutual support, self realization, and growth is not exactly a traditional marriage. But the more I look at it, the more I see it being very much in line with the Bible. I also see it as the most successful model out there.
