Here’s the next bit of the love passage in 1 Corinthians to consider.

Love does not envy or boast … I Corinthians 13:4b ESV

This one posed questions for me, so I decided to look up some definitions.

envy – painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage

boast – a statement expressing excessive pride in oneself

These all speak to having more/less or being better/worse. Comparisons of this nature can be quite damaging.

What has God said about those things in His Word?

Here are a couple of scriptures off the top of my head. (Can you think of others?)

2 Corinthians 10:12 – It’s not wise to compare yourselves to others.
Romans 12:3 – Don’t think too highly of yourself.

Are there any stories in the Word that speak to this? I’m thinking about the disciples arguing about who would have a better position in the Kingdom. Leah and Rachel had envy issues as well in the OT. They both wanted to have children as a way of earning Jacob’s love. What a mess they made!

Let’s spend the day talking to God about this and look for understanding.
