(Need to start at the beginning? Day 1)
Probably the biggest road block to being generous for me was the fear of going without.
The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Proverbs 11:25 AMP
If I do all this giving, who will take care of me? Without realizing it I was keeping score and giving only about as much as I got. That meant I was at the mercy of other people’s goodness (or lack thereof).
Beating this meant trusting God to take care of me and building my own generosity standard. I chose to be a generous person and give regardless of what others were doing (or not doing).
I started small and built trust in God along the way. There were frustrating times when my generosity was rejected or my motivation was judged, but God was (and is) always faithful to take care of me anyway. I continue to choose generosity and learn.
My other roadblock is busyness.
You can’t be too generous if you’re always rushing around and then falling down exhausted. Developing a healthy life pace has been huge for me and certainly one I continue to grow in.
I’ve also had to grow in grace. God asks us to lavish care – even on those stinky people who irritate us. It’s amazing how the fruit of generosity can heal and change folks (that would be me too).
What hangs y’all up when it comes to generosity?
