When God created mankind, He told them when a couple gets married they are to separate from their parents, hold fast to each other, and create a new family unit.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 ESV
Yet He also said we are to honor our parents. Now Paul is talking to children in this scripture, but I think the attitude of honor needs to hold throughout life.
“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise) … Ephesians 6:2 ESV
Let’s spend the day talking to God about holding fast to our spouse and creating a unique family unit. How does that impact the different areas of our life? How do we continue to honor our parents even though they no longer have parental authority in our lives and God calls us to build our lives with our spouse? How does our relationship with our spouse differ from our other relationships?
