This quote from James Clear’s newsletter almost took my breath away.
Two simple rules:
1. You get better at what you practice.
2. Everything is practice.
Look around and you may be surprised by what people are “practicing” each day. If you consider each moment a repetition, what are most people training for all day long?
Many people are practicing getting mad on social media. Others are practicing the fine art of noticing how they have been wronged. Still more have mastered the craft of making plans (but never following through).
But, of course, it doesn’t have to be that way.
What are you practicing?
For good or bad (or anything in between), we are building our lives and our marriages by what we repeatedly do.

Let’s do good stuff that leads to a happier life. Let’s train for a healthier marriage. Repeat.

I had an interesting moment of training the other day.
On Tuesdays, I go to the coffee shop a bit early and stake out a seating area. I gather with friends and we need a kid-friendly area (we are 6 adults and 5 kids at our fullest).
Well, last Tuesday the usual elderly man was seated there (he exits before the rest of the gals show up), however, he was taking a nap. A nap!

I waited fairly patiently for him to finish his nap and exit. Hmmm. He was apparently quite sleepy. How to handle this situation?
I went through a myriad of emotions and thoughts, some good, some not so good. I actually went back to think through some of the challenges here to find something I could lean into.
I eventually calmed down, trusted God to take care of our little group, and found a good amount of compassion for an elderly man who wanted to be around others and, for some reason, was short on sleep.
The good news: He woke up and went on his way, and our group of gals had a lovely time as usual. My heart had a work-out, but that was good exercise for me.
